The ReqHunt Remote Index

The Remote Index describes one thing only: what share of a company's live open roles are remote, right now. It is computed from the job postings we read hourly from each company's own careers page — not from surveys, self-reported policies or press statements.

The four bands

The bands are not evenly spaced, deliberately. The 10% cut is the only sharp break in the real distribution — most companies post almost no remote roles at all. Above 10% the distribution is close to flat, so 40% and 70% split that plateau evenly rather than inventing clusters that do not exist.

The 10-role floor

A company needs at least 10 live open roles to be scored. With five roles, one remote posting moves the share by 20 points, and a band would say more about timing than about the company. Below the floor the index reads not enough open roles to score. This is why every score on ReqHunt is printed with its sample size inline — "81% remote across 175 open roles" — so you can see how much weight it carries.

What counts as remote

Only roles a company itself describes as remote count in the numerator. Hybrid roles are excluded from the numerator — they require presence at a location — but they stay in the denominator, because they are real open roles. The denominator is every live open role. This is exactly the definition behind the remote percentage printed above the index on each company page, so the two numbers can never disagree.

Incomplete location data is withheld, not scored

Some job boards publish locations we cannot resolve to a work arrangement. If more than 30% of a company's live roles have unresolved location data, we publish no tier and say so: location data incomplete for this company. The alternative would be scoring those companies On-Site, which would publish a gap in our parsing as a verdict about a real business. Roughly 500 companies are withheld on this basis.

Refresh and stability

Roles are re-read hourly and the index is recomputed on the same cadence, so it tracks live hiring rather than a fixed annual snapshot. That means a company near a band edge, or near the 10-role floor, can move. Around 5% of scored companies change band or eligibility in a fortnight, almost always by one step.

What it does not measure

It is not a culture score, a ranking, or a measure of how good a company is to work for. An On-Site company is not failing at anything — clinical, retail, manufacturing, lab and field work happen in places. The index only tells you where the roles this company is hiring for right now can be done from.

The index appears on every company page we publish. Browse companies and their live roles from the ReqHunt home page.
